Experts Discuss AI’s Role in Climate Governance at ILA Webinar 

The International Law Association (ILA) Committee on Artificial Intelligence, New Technologies, and International Law hosted a webinar on ‘Governing Climate Change in an Artificial Intelligence Era’ on November 15, 2024, bringing together experts to explore the intersection of AI, climate governance, and international law. 

The discussion focused on how AI is transforming climate action, from enhancing climate modeling and risk assessment to optimizing energy efficiency and supporting global climate policies. Experts addressed the legal and ethical challenges of AI-driven solutions and the role of international law in ensuring responsible innovation. 

Among the key contributors was Elena I. Athwal, ILA Global Media Officer and independent expert on international law, energy, and environmental governance. Ms. Athwal highlighted regulatory challenges, the need for legal frameworks to govern AI applications in climate mitigation, and how international cooperation can shape AI’s role in environmental protection. 

The webinar underscored the urgency of addressing climate change through technological advancements and legal innovation, with panelists emphasizing interdisciplinary collaboration as a crucial factor in shaping AI-driven sustainability efforts.
