Sustainable Trade and Entrepreneurship: Pathways to Re-globalization

Dynamic Discussions on Sustainable Trade and Entrepreneurship at WTO Public Forum 

Geneva, Switzerland – September 13, 2024 

The WTO Public Forum 2024, held from September 10 to 13 in Geneva, brought together policymakers, business leaders, academics, and international organizations to explore this year’s theme: Re-globalization: Better Trade for a Better World’. As the world faces evolving economic and environmental challenges, discussions focused on reshaping global trade to ensure sustainability, inclusivity, and resilience. 

One of the standout sessions, Sustainable Trade and Entrepreneurship: Pathways to Re-globalization’, provided a thought-provoking discussion on aligning trade practices with sustainability goals. Moderated by Elena I. Athwal, Research Fellow for the UNESCO Chair on Environmental Law and Sustainable Development at Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU), the panel featured: 

  • Her Excellency Dr. Hend Al-Muftah – Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar to the United Nations Office in Geneva 
  • Mr. Ahmed Al-Sulaiti – Director of the Office of the State of Qatar to the WTO and other Economic Organisations in Geneva 
  • Dr. Damilola S. Olawuyi (SAN) – Professor and Associate Dean for Research at HBKU, and UNESCO Chairholder on Environmental Law and Sustainable Development 
  • Dr. Mena Hassan – Senior Trade Policy and Trade Facilitation Expert at the WTO 

The panel explored key issues in sustainable trade, including: 

 
✅ The role of international trade in advancing sustainable development 
✅ Challenges and opportunities for sustainable entrepreneurship 
✅ The impact of digitalization and innovation in making trade more inclusive 

The session emphasized cross-sector collaboration and the need for strong policy frameworks to ensure that sustainability is integrated into global trade practices. Speakers highlighted how re-globalization efforts can support environmental responsibility, fair economic opportunities, and innovative trade solutions. 

The WTO Public Forum 2024 continues to be a vital platform for shaping the future of global trade. As the multilateral trading system marks its 30th anniversary, this year’s discussions underscored the importance of inclusive and sustainable trade policies that benefit communities worldwide.
